A highly anticipated Marvel TV show has definitely been pushed back to 2023, according to a new report.
Per TV line (opens in new tab), Secret Invasion — a Marvel Disney Plus show that was supposed to launch this year — won’t hit the streaming service until next year. TVLine claims the series, which stars Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury and others, will release sometime in 2023, meaning it will arrive alongside Loki season 2 and three other TV shows next year.
Secret Invasion’s delayed release shouldn’t come as a surprise to some Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans. Earlier, Jackson confirmed he was heading back to the UK to film reshoots of the Disney Plus series, telling TV presenter Jimmy Kimmel that he would be back in London in August.
Filming pick-ups for movies and TV shows is not uncommon these days, particularly after the pandemic. However, Marvel leakers such as DanielRPK (via Les Dossiers Geek (opens in new tab)) and great phase (opens in new tab)stated that the Secret Invasion reshoots will be part of a four-month shoot alongside The Marvels, one of Marvel’s 2023 movie offerings.
So Secret Invasion won’t be ready to release before the end of 2022. However, it will likely be ready to release early next year, allowing you to start Marvel Studios’ 2023 slate. We’ve reached out to Disney for comment and will update this article if we receive a response.
Secret Invasion is one of four Marvel TV shows in production right now, with the aforementioned Loki season two also being filmed in London. Meanwhile, principal photography has begun on another MCU Phase 4 TV series on Echo, while full production is scheduled to begin on Ironheart’s Disney Plus show in August.
That quartet won’t be the only Marvel Studios projects that could arrive in 2023. Three MCU movies – Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Marvels – are expected to hit theaters exclusively in February, May, and July 2023, respectively. Analysis: Why is Secret Invasion undergoing reshoots?
Potential spoilers – and descriptions of scenes of a harrowing nature – follow for Secret Invasion. Check back now if you’re reluctant to read about both.
Unsurprisingly, Secret Invasion is undergoing reshoots to allow its narrative to flow seamlessly during (and between) episodes.
However, there’s a much more serious reason why parts of the MCU TV show are being remade: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
According to Marvel insider DanielRPK (collected by reddit (opens in new tab)), the Secret Invasion story currently contains a sequel that comes a little too close to home with real-world events. The scene supposedly comprises an attack by some Skrulls, disguised as Russian soldiers, coordinating a terrorist attack on Moscow’s Red Square, which results in the death of some Ukrainian citizens.
Understandably, given the events happening in Ukraine at the moment, Marvel chose to reshoot this scene (and any others of a similar nature). Clearly, this is the right decision for the studio to have made as well, in light of the ongoing war. Marvel cut a story potentially related to the Falcon and the Winter Soldier pandemic before the series arrived in May 2020 – five months after the initial Covid-19 discovery – so the studio has an earlier way to properly remove sensitive content. of their productions.
We’re sure all MCU fans are prepared to wait for Secret Invasion to arrive, if it means those scenes are dialed in, altered, or removed entirely. In the grand scheme of things, postponing a Marvel TV series pales in comparison to what’s happening in Ukraine.
