The price of GTA 5 on PS5 is about to skyrocket as the PlayStation exclusive price cut comes to an end.
GTA 5 was released on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S earlier this year at a “special launch price” (opens in new tab), temporarily cutting a large part of its price. Xbox fans were able to get the latest version of the beloved crime ’em at half price – $19.99 / £17.49 / AU$29.97. Meanwhile, PlayStation fans enjoyed a 75% discount, bringing the game down to just $9.99 / £8.75 / AU$14.99.
Also, if you are a PS5 player who has already played GTA 5 multiplayer on PS4, you can claim the next-gen version of GTA Online for free. This offer isn’t available to Xbox users, but they were able to choose the standalone multiplayer component for half the price.
That’s about to change, however, as the post-launch discount period is only valid until June 14th. After that date, GTA 5 will return to full price on both consoles, which is $39.99 / £34.99 / AU$59.95. GTA Online will join it, coming in at $19.99 / £17.99 / AU$30.95, and will no longer be free for PS5 players.
If you own the latest Sony hardware and want to take advantage of the discount, you’ll need to buy GTA 5 from the PS Store directly through the console – you can’t use the PS webstore to get the game at a discount. Unfortunately, that means those who don’t already own a PS5 can’t buy the game cheaply to save for later.
Xbox gamers, however, can purchase the Xbox Series X|S version via the Xbox online store.
Is the next-gen GTA 5 worth it?
This is the second time that GTA 5 has been ported to a new console generation. Is it really worth investing in a game that was released almost a decade ago? Absolutely, if you can buy it for the right price, and that post-launch discount definitely fits the bill.
The next-gen version comes with several enhanced graphics options and three modes to suit your platform. The highest of these, Fidelity, has ray-tracing and 4K resolution, although it can only hit 30fps. Performance mode trades sophisticated light reflections for a ceiling of 60fps while maintaining ultra-HD resolutions, and Performance RT maintains 60fps with ray tracing but only upscaled 4K images.
The graphical improvements are definitely noticeable, and during our time with the game, we were particularly impressed by its transformative lighting engine and faster load times. That’s not to mention new PS5-specific features that take advantage of DualSense’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, which make Los Santos feel that much more convincing.
All this for $10 isn’t much of a spend. If you think you’ll be jumping into Rockstar’s acclaimed open-world shooter at some point, and you already have a high-end console to play it with, then you can grab the game now. Better take advantage of the discount while you can.
